PREFACE

When Liz McDannel, president of the Daily Bruin Alumni Association, asked me to make reprints of my thesis, Loud Bark and Curious Eyes: A History of the UCLA Daily Bruin, 1919-1955, available to members and friends of the association, I demurred at first because I wanted to check the text to see if it had held up during the past quarter century.

Not too badly, I found, though in one or two places I was able to insert some new material not available to me in May 1970, when I finished the original text. And I cured some errors and updated some style quirks from days of yore. Gone, for example, is "Miss Edelman." She is now just plain "Edelman."

I also had to insert some explanations that were not needed in 1970, which, after all, was only some 15 years after the period of time described in the thesis. The campus green boxes used to distribute the Daily Bruin have all vanished, replaced by fancy rigs that include an area for paid clothing ads and bins for the many ethnic newspapers that have sprung up in the past decade or two. What was the Blue "C"? I had to explain. And tell why it had been covered with dirt.

The question is, Why should anybody care about these long-gone political battles on the UCLA campus? Clearly, some people do. I received a phone call some time ago from a former DB editor who said the frayed copy of my thesis in the DB office was "required reading" for him while at UCLA. (He had tracked me down through the Internet, certainly a communication device unheard of during most of the history of the Bruin.)

More to the point: This tale demonstrates that the freedoms we take for granted, on the campus or off, are constantly under attack—often by people in positions of great authority. We let down our guard at our peril.
