SCHOOL BOOKS.
LIBRARY HAS SOME.
What shall be done with 6,000 volumes purchased with school money, now in the public library? This is the problem that now confronts the Library Board.
A.M. Brown, G.M. Giffen and J.H. Foley of the Board of Education . . . asked that these books be reserved for the sole use of teachers during the school year.
The books. . . in the library. . . have been separately stamped, so that it is possible to segregate them. They are now subject to general circulation. Every sort of literature, from mathematics to fiction, is covered.. . .
[A] number of points were brought out that were revelations to the new Library Board. And it is evident they believe the fault lies largely with the teachers.
At the time the books were placed in the library, it was decided, as a concession to the teachers, to allow them to take out twenty books at a time to be kept one month, either from the books purchased with school moneys or from those belonging to the library.
As there are about 600 teachers in the city, it is not hard to see why not only reference works, but [also] books of fiction are hard to obtain
If the teachers of the city can take 12,000 books from the library and keep them out for a month, it is small wonder that other patrons have to wait a long time to secure the books they wish to read.
Mr. Clark [otherwise unidentified] suggested that. . . the number of books might be reduced to ten, and the time for keeping them out to two weeks. . . .
It is probable that the board will place $10,000 additional insurance on the books and furniture of the library this year. The policies expire next month.
